The Landing Page Audit We Run Before Increasing Anyone's Budget
Fourteen checks, in order, that we run on a landing page before recommending more ad spend — with the conversion-rate ranges we typically see before and after.
Conversion · · 9 min read
Ad spend is the most expensive way to compensate for a weak landing page. If your page converts at 2% and a competitor's converts at 6%, they can pay three times your click price and still win the auction indefinitely. Before we take a budget increase from any client, the page has to survive the following audit.
1. Message match
The headline should contain the words the visitor searched for. Someone who typed 'emergency boiler repair Manchester' and lands on a page headed 'Trusted Heating Solutions Since 1998' has to do translation work, and a meaningful share of them will not bother. Where budget allows, we build one page per major service theme rather than one page per company.
2. The offer above the fold
Within the first screen the visitor should know what they get, roughly what it costs or how pricing works, and what happens when they press the button. 'Get a quote' is weaker than 'Get a fixed price in 24 hours — no site visit needed' because the second removes two objections in one line.
3. Form length versus intent
- High-intent, high-value services can support 5–7 fields; the extra fields raise lead quality more than they suppress volume.
- Low-consideration offers should ask for the minimum and enrich later.
- Every optional field should be deleted. If it is optional it is not needed, and it still costs you completions.
- Multi-step forms consistently outperform single long forms in our accounts, typically by 15–40% on completion rate, because the first step is trivially easy.
4. Speed on a mid-range phone
Test on a throttled 4G connection, not your office fibre. Largest Contentful Paint above roughly 2.5 seconds costs conversions measurably, and hero video is the usual culprit. Compress images, defer non-critical scripts, and be ruthless about third-party tags — every chat widget, heatmap and review embed is a tax paid on every visit.
5. Proof that a stranger would believe
Named testimonials with a photograph and a specific outcome outperform anonymous star ratings. Trade accreditations, insurance details, guarantee terms and a real street address all do quiet work. Avoid stock photography of people who obviously do not work at your company; visitors notice more than marketers assume.
6. Objection handling near the button
The moment before clicking is when doubts surface: will I get spammed, is this a call centre, how quickly will someone reply, am I committing to anything. A short line of microcopy directly under the submit button answering those questions is one of the cheapest conversion gains available.
7 to 14: the rest of the list
- 7. One primary call to action repeated, not five competing ones.
- 8. Navigation stripped back on paid landing pages so the only forward path is the form.
- 9. Phone number tappable and, where staffed, prominent — some segments will never fill in a form.
- 10. A visible response-time promise, and an autoresponder that honours it.
- 11. Accessibility basics: labelled inputs, contrast that passes, keyboard-navigable form.
- 12. Thank-you page that sets expectations and offers a calendar booking as an immediate next step.
- 13. Analytics on form-field abandonment so you can see which field kills completions.
- 14. A test running. Not a redesign — a single hypothesis with enough traffic to resolve within four weeks.
What we typically see afterwards
Across service-business accounts, pages entering this audit usually convert between 1.8% and 3.5% of paid clicks. After message-match splitting, form restructuring and speed work, the same traffic typically lands between 5% and 9%. That is not a promise for your business — it depends on offer strength and competitiveness — but it does explain why we would rather spend the first month on the page than on the auction.
